What you need to know

Arriving on Time

  • Due to a busy schedule, your lesson may run back to back with another student's lesson. Therefore, if you are 5 minutes late, your lesson will be 5 minutes shorter. Please feel free to arrive early to ensure your full lesson time.

  • If you do come early, please consider utilizing my studio for quiet piano related activities, such as extra theory, and various other programs I have available.  All you have to do is ask!

  • I will leave our front gate open during lesson times. If, for some unforeseen reason the gate isn't open, please call or text me! Alternately, we have a man-gate entrance to the left of the main gate which can also be utilized.

How much should we Practice?

  • I get asked this all the time! There is no definitive answer... When we are first learning the piano, the songs are easy. Sometimes they are not even really "songs", but are more just exploring the piano sounds. We do still need to practice them, though! We need to set up a habit. Practicing piano, as with anything, takes time and effort.

  • Parents, make sure you find a time that works best for the student, and for the family. Maybe it works best to have a certain amount of time to sit down and play, but it may also work to find 5 minutes here and there several times a day, if you have a busy and hectic family life. Just make sure your child gets the opportunity. I have many students come in each week and tell me they couldn't practice because they were soooooo busy. I get that! Lots of families are very busy! However, taking piano lessons means you are committing to something else that will take time, so please ensure your children get that time to achieve success.

Hygiene

  • Students must keep their fingernails trimmed. This is necessary to play with proper hand position. Also, please be sure to have clean hands! If you need to wash them before lessons, just ask :)

Holidays/Days off School

  • If your lesson falls on a holiday or day off, there will be no lesson, unless otherwise agreed upon. Some days off can be used to make up lessons that I have cancelled due to illness etc.

Studio Updates

  • I would like parents to keep a close eye on this site, as well as music journals, as I sometimes include information for students and parents.

  • Most correspondence will be by text

Recitals

  • By attending informal recitals throughout the year, it will help to ease any anxiety that may occur at more formal recitals. The informal recitals are for students only. Formal recitals will have parents in attendance (typically Christmas and Year end)

  • Informal recitals will run approximately every 2 months, depending on student availability and interest.

At the Studio

  • Students who remain at the house when it is not their lesson time should stay in the studio area. They may bring their own books or schoolwork or make use of music-related activities I have available. Please sit quietly so as not to disturb anyone else's lesson.

  • Remember--the studio is an extension of my private residence and must be regarded (and respected) as such.

Pets

  • As you all know, we are a multi-pet household. All of our pets are very friendly, and will come and check you out, given the chance. Please let me know of any allergies or any other possible problems so I can  keep them away during lessons.

  • When entering or leaving the studio, take care not to let the cats or dogs out, and please be sure to close all doors behind you. We love our pets as part of our family, and would be heartbroken if anything should happen to them. Likewise, if you use the man-gate, please ensure it is kept closed and locked (for the dogs)
